In-House Counsel

Job Summary

The Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) seeks qualified legal counsel to support its statewide mattress recycling programs in California, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Oregon. In-House Counsel will assist with day-to-day legal needs, including reviewing, drafting and negotiating contracts, legal research, and advising on other legal and corporate governance issues. This position reports to the Director, Legal Affairs. This is a hybrid position based in Alexandria, VA.

Responsibilities

· Contracts: Draft, review, negotiate and manage complex contracts with vendors, service providers, educational institutions, and municipal governments to ensure compliance with legal standards and organizational policies and practices.

· Legal Research: Conduct thorough legal research on relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards related to recycling, waste management, and environmental compliance.

· Advisory Support: Provide legal advice to internal teams on a variety of issues, including corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and risk management.

· Dispute Resolution: Manage and resolve any legal disputes that may arise, coordinating with the Director of Legal Affairs or external counsel as necessary.

· Provide legal guidance and advice in support of program operations

· Perform various other duties to support the legal needs of the organization

Requirements

· 3+ years of law firm or in-house legal experience i, preferably in environmental law, waste management, or a related field.

· Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school

· Admission to the bar in California or Oregon

· Ability to waive into Virginia bar

· Significant contract drafting/negotiation experience

· Familiarity with insurance compliance matters

· Ability to multitask and adjust to the evolving needs of a rapidly growing organization

· Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgement in prioritizing tasks

· Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

· Excellent written and oral communications skills are essential
