The Mattress Recycling Council seeks innovative ways to combat the illegal dumping of mattresses, box springs and futons in California communities. MRC is now soliciting applications to fund pilot programs that could serve as models to prevent or eradicate this type of activity. The maximum award will be $100,000. Four broad areas of potential pilot programs that will be considered for funding include:
- Education programs should spread information about existing mattress collection channels.
- Improved awareness or enforcement of illegal dumping laws for mattresses.
- Establishing or improving mattress drop-off programs.
- Beautification of an area affected by blight.
In evaluating proposals, additional points may be awarded to projects focused on beautification or within an environmental justice area — a community disproportionately impacted by environmental pollution.
The submission deadline is Friday, Nov. 15 at 5 p.m. PST.
