Increase to $18.00 Begins on April 1, 2026
In accordance with California state law, the California mattress recycling fee that must be collected by retailers and other sellers on all mattresses, futons and foundations sold for use in California will increase from $16.00 to $18.00 per unit sold on or after April 1, 2026. This fee adjustment reflects increases to third party labor, transportation, and operational costs.
What You Need to Know
- The $18.00 fee applies per unit, regardless of size or type (mattress, futon or foundation).
- The fee is NOT subject to sales tax.
- The fee must appear as a separate line item on all receipts, whether sold in-store or online.
- The full amount must be remitted to the Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) via MRCreporting.org.
Who Must Comply
All entities selling mattresses or foundations to end users must collect and remit the fee, including:
- Brick-and-mortar retailers
- Online sellers (including marketplace sellers)
- Commercial volume sellers (e.g., hotels, hospitality facilities, boarding schools, colleges and universities, nursing homes, medical centers)
System Update Required
Please update your point-of-sale systems to reflect the new fee amount before April 1, 2026. When reporting 2026 sales, MRCreporting.org will automatically calculate the remittance as: $18.00 × number of units sold.
Customer Education Material
Updated customer education materials will be distributed to registered retail locations in March and available to download from the resources library.
