Beginning January 1, 2025, the recycling fee collected on each mattress and foundation sold for use in California and Connecticut will increase to $16.00 per unit. This increase is largely driven by rising minimum wages and inflation impacting operational costs for collecting, transporting and disassembling mattresses.
“We’re committed to our successful recycling programs and actively work to control costs and find efficiencies across our supply chains despite broad inflationary pressures,” says MRC’s Chief Operating Officer Mike O’Donnell.
The recycling fees will remain a flat rate and must be visible on the receipt. Those currently registered to report and remit the recycling fee to MRC received further details in this notice issued on MRCreporting.org.
In December 2024, retailers registered with MRC’s California and Connecticut programs will receive updated posters and customer handouts. MRC will also make copies of these materials available to download from MattressRecyclingCouncil.org.
