Bedding Industry’s California Mattress Recycling Program Reaches New Milestones in Ninth Year

SACRAMENTO — July x, 2025 — More than 1.56 million California mattresses were recycled in 2024 by the Mattress Recycling Council (MRC), which diverted 65 million pounds of materials from landfills.

MRC filed its 2024 annual report with CalRecycle earlier this month, and reported continued success in reducing landfill waste, combating illegal dumping, and expanding public access to mattress recycling across the state. Since 2016, MRC, through its Bye Bye Mattress program, has recycled more than 13 million mattresses in California.

MRC is recycling a greater percentage of the mattresses disposed of. Despite mattress sales declining by 3.5% last year, MRC recycled 6.1% more mattresses than in 2023.

“California’s mattress recycling program continues to demonstrate how a successful industry stewardship program can protect our environment, create green jobs, and reduce waste all at once,” said Mike O’Donnell, Chief Operating Officer at MRC. “Thanks to the support of consumers, retailers and solid waste providers across the state, we are making mattress recycling more convenient, effective and impactful than ever before.”

MRC is a nonprofit organization that operates recycling programs, under the Bye Bye Mattress brand, in states with mattress recycling laws, including California, Oregon, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. MRC’s California program is funded through a state-approved $16 recycling fee that is collected on every mattress or box spring sold in the state.

Key 2024 Program Highlights:

  • Public Access: More than 99% of California residents live within 15 miles of a recycling location or collection event.
  • Commercial Volume Growth: MRC expanded access for businesses, with 172 permanent sites accepting commercial drop-off and an additional 290 pickups at mattress retailers, colleges, hotels, military bases, and healthcare facilities.
  • Consumer Outreach: MRC generated over 745 million impressions through advertising, media and public engagement efforts.
  • Innovation & Research: Research funded by MRC is focused on identifying new end markets for recycled mattress foam and sustainability initiatives in the mattress industry.
