A small-scale study was conducted to assess the presence of mold and bacteria from used mattress materials and to determine whether residual levels posed potential health risks. Of the five mattresses tested, all formed active mold and bacteria colonies, with one showing a concerning level of mold. MRC’s guidelines emphasize the importance of keeping mattresses clean and dry prior to recycling. This study recommended developing a simple, reliable method for mold detection and development.
