CalRecycle Approves MRC 2018 California Annual Report

MRC submitted its 2018 California Annual Report to California’s Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) on July 1. The report summarized MRC’s important progress in improving and expanding its statewide mattress recycling efforts.

Some highlights in the report were, over 80% of mattresses discarded in California in 2018 were diverted from landfills, over 1.4 million mattresses and foundations were processed in 2018 and over 90% of California residents had access to mattress recycling options. In addition to this progress, we are happy to report, CalRecycle approved the 2018 California report as submitted! Managing director Mike O’Donnell said, “We greatly appreciate the work of CalRecycle staff in recommending approval our 2018 annual report which reflects the significant work and achievements of our Bye Bye Mattress program.”

MRC Staff in Action at CRRA in California

MRC staff members were among the industry experts and presenters at CRRA’s Annual Conference and Tradeshow this month in Palm Springs, Calif. As one of the most comprehensive and informative conferences dedicated to recycling and sustainable materials management in California it attracts more than 600 attendees each year.

Amanda Wall, Manager of Consumer Communications, contributed to a panel discussion about how to develop and frame the recycling message for consumers. She presented MRC’s consumer education strategy and the steps MRC is taking to create outreach materials in other languages and approach multicultural audiences.

Justin Fallon, Director of Operations, moderated When Curbside Doesn’t Cut It: Managing Plastics, Carpet, and E-Waste session. This session discussed how non-profits, stewardship organizations and the state can work together to be more sustainable.

The event also provided MRC the opportunity to discuss the Bye Bye Mattress program’s progress, answer questions and encourage involvement.

New Round of Grant Funding Available for California Collection Sites

MRC is now accepting micro grant applications for its second grant cycle. California facilities that currently collect or will collect discarded mattresses from the public for dismantling by MRC-contracted recyclers are eligible to apply.

Up to $10,000 is available per collection site. Eligible projects include infrastructure or equipment that will (1) improve the recyclability of discarded units by providing weather protection for collected units, (2) result in fewer units being landfilled, and/or (3) create other efficiencies, such as increasing safety or lowering program transportation costs by transitioning existing collection sites from roll-off containers to 53’ trailers for mattress consolidation.

Applications will be accepted through November 15, 2019. For more information and questions, click here or contact Abbie Beane at abeane@mattressrecyclingcouncil.org.
