REMINDER: Starting Jan. 1 Futons Added to MRC Program in Calif.; $10.50 Fee Applies

Beginning Jan.1, futons will be added to the mattress recycling program in California and will be subject to recycling fees and accepted at MRC recyclers. The $10.50 fee and recycling obligations apply only to the futon mattress, not to the futon frame or base. This change is a result of Assembly Bill 187 (AB 187) signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Oct. 10, amending California’s Used Mattress Recovery and Recycling Act (SB 254). More information about the new requirements and next steps for futon retailers and manufacturers is available here or visit

Jennifer Duran Joins MRC as Central Calif. Program Coordinator

Jennifer Duran has joined MRC as an additional Central California Program Coordinator. She will be the primary point of contact for collection sites and recycling participants within her territory (see map below) and work to further expand the collection network and conduct public education about mattress recycling. She is MRC’s fifth regional coordinator in California, where MRC recycles more than 1 million mattresses a year.

“Jennifer has close to a decade of proven success in operating efficient recycling programs, building diverse partnerships and raising consumer awareness in the Central Valley,” said Mike O’Donnell, managing director of MRC. “We are pleased to have her join our team and lead the expansion of the Bye Bye Mattress program in the region.” Read more here.

New Commercial Recycling Information and Municipal Directory on

MRC’s website has been recently updated to include more robust commercial recycling information and a municipal pickup directory. These changes are a result of the rapid growth of MRC’s Commercial Volume Pickup program and an increase in collection locations accepting commercial volume. For businesses with a large number of mattresses to be recycled, the new commercial recycling page provides information about options through MRC to arrange for no-cost containers and transportation, as well as program contacts, details about available recyclers and collection locations. is also now featuring a municipal pickup directory that reflects all the curbside programs offering free pick-up for residents within a service area in MRC program states. Previously, the Bye Bye Mattress locator (which was built to demonstrate a singular physical location instead of a service area) was facing challenges in keeping up with growing participation from municipal curbside programs. This new feature is a great resource, offering consumers instant information and options.

University Move In Season Drives Recycling Volume through Commercial Pickup Program

From April to October, MRC worked with colleges and universities in California, Connecticut and Rhode Island through the Commercial Volume Pickup (CVP) program to collect discarded mattresses for recycling during move-in season. Thirty educational institutions participated, resulting in 99 loads of mattresses totaling 12,376 units. That’s a grand total weight of 637,455 pounds of material. MRC is proud to be supporting university sustainability initiatives through mattress recycling and our CVP program.

California had 13 participating universities, Connecticut had 12 and Rhode Island had 5. University of California clients together collected 13 loads of mattresses totaling 2,931 units or 161,205 pounds. USC collected the largest number of any university during this period, 1,333 pieces. Connecticut universities recycled 5,526 units and Rhode Island reported 1,018. Wesleyan University in Connecticut contributed 480 units and continues to contribute a great deal of mattresses to the program annually. A+ for effort to all of our university CVP participants!
