In MRC-funded research at George Mason University, researchers led by Shaghayegh Bagheri demonstrated a practical approach for incorporating recycled polyurethane mattress foam into footwear. Polyurethane mattress foam was treated using two different processes and then incorporating the materials into both cushioning midsoles and high‑traction outsoles. The results support both environmental impact through mattress waste diversion and technical feasibility for footwear applications, The research provides a foundation for continued work to scale‑up, including the use of greater recycled‑content, and expanded real‑world testing.
