Funding Available to Improve California Mattress Collection Sites


California public collection sites are eligible to apply for funding to improve the loading efficiency or safety of their mattress collection operations with a maximum amount of $10,000. The participating host is encouraged to contribute to the site improvement costs, but it is not a condition of the award.

Digest: Public California mattress collection sites are eligible to apply for up to $10,000 in site improvement funding. Proposed projects should demonstrate how the funding will:

  • Increase the number of mattresses and box springs collected,
  • Improve protection of discarded units from weather to enhance recyclability, or
  • Achieve other operational efficiencies such as lowering costs, preventing container vandalism, or improving worker safety.

Examples of successful applications have included:

  • Construction of weather awnings and cement pads to preserve mattress quality and improve on-site handling,
  • Purchase of mobile loading ramps for more efficient loading
  • Additional storage space to shield mattresses from environmental exposure.

Eligibility:

New or existing mattress collection sites open to the public for drop-off are eligible to apply. This includes private companies, nonprofit organizations, and government entities.
