Transforming Recycled Foam into Surface-Engineered Powders

Category: New Markets

MRC continues to support projects to identify new markets for recycled mattress foam. Toward this goal, RoCo has developed a grinding process that turns polyurethane mattress foam into free-flowing powders about the size of a grain of sand.  While researchers evaluated the materials as fillers in cement and rigid foam, the powders also could be used in coatings, engineering plastics, adhesives and sealants, or in the production of new mattress foam. Further research is planned to identify target markets and then demonstrate feasibility.
